General
My name is Daniel Arvesen, I am a sophomore at
Earlham College. I am very interested in computers so I will be studying Computer Science.

I come from Bloomington, Indiana. I was born and raised there. I always thought the town was kind of ~, but after being in Richmond for a while I'm beginning to miss Bloomington. I went to Bloomington High School North, and did a few activities there. I was the school webmaster in my junior and senior year. I'm sort of proud of being the webmaster even though I had to make some changes that I did not approve of. Unfortunately, I had little say in what went up. The current site design was not created by me, even though I kind of wish it was; it's very nice. The past year (2002-2003), the site got pretty worse because something happened with the district's server and SSI got turned off or something, so all the subpages look like crap. I'm looking at the web site now, and it obviously hasn't been updaated for the new year. I'm wondering if they have a new student working on it. If they don't I could probably recommend one.

Computers
I have been interested in computers for basically all my life. Our first computer was a 286 from a noname company called "Leading Technology" or something like that. It had MS-DOS on it and I basically used it to play game and write reports. I did mess around with DOS some but I didn't really know what I was doing.

Our next computer was a Compaq Presario 9546 (Echo). This computer ran Windows 95, and it seemed really fast. We also got Internet access around this time...AOL (ugh). Around this time I also created my first web page, which I think is now lost. We pushed this computer to its limits. We basically kept it for 4 years before we got a new one.

Our next computer was a Dell Dimension T700. My family still uses it right now but I think it's kind of on it's last leg. Everything could easily be fixed if I could reinstall Windows. This computer has a 700 MHz Pentium III, a 32 MB TNT2 video card, a 20 GB hard drive, a 12x DVD-ROM drive, 256 MB RAM, and other stuff. Once we got this computer I got the Compaq, so i used this as my main computer. I kind of spruced it up a bit by cleaning out the hard drives, but this computer was already pretty messed up to begin with, I'm still amazed I was able to use it for so long. I tried to do everything on the Compaq, from running Quake II to playing MP3s.

I then bought stella and I'm still using that. I'm thinking of building a new computer this fall/winter; I don't know if it will actually happen. I was planning on building it this spring but that obviously never happened. This will be a replacement for stella - it will be called Nereus.

Movies
I'm a big movie fan and I own about 115
DVDs. Some of my favorite movies are Amelie, American Beauty, Brazil, Fight Club, Leon, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Minority Report, Ocean's Eleven, Pulp Fiction, SE7EN, Snatch, Spirited Away, and X-Men. These movies are all pretty recent, but I do enjoy some old classic films. The ones above are just movies that I own. Some other movies that I might not own, but still enjoy are: Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Rear Window, Psycho, M, The Third Man, Das Boot, and Rififi.

Some of my favorite directors are:

Music
I really like music. The main genre that I like is Alternative Rock, with bands such as R.E.M., The Cure, Pink Floyd, Radiohead and U2. I kind of branched out in the past year and now I like The Flaming Lips (more like obsessed with), Enya, the Pogues, Moby, Midnight Oil, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, Beck, and others. And of course I like the Beatles.

TV
I don't really watch TV that much, but I love Futurama. It's a sci-fi cartoon show that was on Fox before they canceled it >:\. It was created by the same guy that created the Simpsons, and in my opinion, it is a lot funnier than the Simpsons.
