For Day 14, Monday November 26th
- Turn-in your presentation outlines so I can give you feedback before you deliver them on Tue/Wed of this week.
For Day 13, Wednesday November 14th
- Virtual class, meet in LBC first floor conference room where the VTC is setup. Paper/project questions and SC07 technology tour.
For Day 12, Wednesday November 7th
- Read through the end of chapter 5 in The Virtual Community.
- Add your project page URL to the Senior Seminar Wiki page. See the note below about content.
- Come to class with questions, problems, etc. related to your project.
For Day 11, Wednesday October 31st
- Read through the end of chapter 3 in The Virtual Community. Consider Rheingold's notion of a virtual community based on CMC, how many such communities do you belong to given his definition?
- Send me the URL of your project log. If you want to do it in a wiki send me email asking for a login.
- Send me the URL of your project's webspace. Things you can put there might include:
  1. Description/abstract
  2. Bibliography (which is easy to publish if you are using a bibliographic management tool)
  3. Design documents
  4. Your paper (when it's complete or close)
  5. Your software (when it's complete or at least usable)
- Setup your weekly meeting with myself or Jim, go to it, and make progress on your project.
- Come to class with questions about your paper and software.

- Read the preface, introduction, and chapter 1 in The Virtual Community.

For Day 8, Wednesday October 10th
- Survey paper presentations, 10 minutes each with 5 additional minutes for questions and answers. You will present in alphabetical order by last name. Zobel has a bunch of useful information about preparing for and giving good presentations. I will be reviewing and grading the presentations with that framework in mind.
For Day 7, Wednesday October 3rd
- Survey paper due. The detailed instructions for this are here. As I said the other day Zobel has a wealth of useful information about how to approach the research and development of a paper in computer science.
  To turn-in the paper put a print-out of it under my door before 11p on Wednesday October 3rd. I'll be getting back from the airport around then and I'll stop-by to pick them up on my way home.
- There is no class meeting today, I'll be at Oklahoma University's Supercomputing Symposium teaching a workshop and giving a presentation. If you have any questions I'll be available at chat.earlham.edu in the #infocom room during the normal class meeting time.
For Day 6, Wednesday September 26th
- Download and plumb-up the Second Life client. Create a user for yourself and send me a message from in-world with your SL handle. My SL handle is Charliep Hammerer.
- Continue work on your survey paper and come to class with questions.
For Day 5, Wednesday September 19th
- Craft an abstract, maximum of 75 words, which describes what you currently intend to do for your senior project. Print it out and bring it to class to turn-in. Use Zobel's Writing for Computer Science or the Chicago Manual of Style for information on what an abstract should contain and how to write one. Expect this to take a significant chunk of time.
  Do not get hung-up on not yet knowing exactly what you want to do for your project. This is as much an exercise in how to craft a good abstract as it is a focusing device for your work this semester. Bring a printout of the abstract to class to turn-in.
- Finish reading Snowcrash.
- Listen to the Science Friday podcast on Second Life. The URL is www.sciencefriday.com/pages/2007/Aug, the segment aired on August 31st and is called Virtual Worlds, Virtual Lives.
- Come to class prepared to continue discussing possible project ideas.
For Day 4, Wednesday September 12th
- Read through chapter 57 in Snowcrash.
- Check the bandwidth calculation on page 21 of Snowcrash. Assume single mode fiber, only phone books, an arrival rate of one plane every three minutes, and a full load of fuel in the plane. Document these and any other assumptions you make. Work with a partner and write-up your work (one report per pair).
