An overview of the Fall 1996 CS20 semester:
The basis for the grade:
10 points for reports on the readings
(that allows doing it badly 4 times)
10 points for your homepage
10 points for the automated 1040EZ
10 points for your paper on the impact of the computer on society
10 points for your report on surfing, lurking, and listservs
10 points for your hypertext poem/fiction/adventure-game
40 points for your classroom activities and attendance
(n.b. there are 43 class meetings; that means you can cut
a week's worth; a wise person will save those 3 for
illnesses, out of town games, family emergencies, ....)
CS20 is not a spectator sport!
Definitions of terms:
report on a reading: a couple of paragraphs e-mailed to me
outlining what YOU think of the issues raised by the article.
homepage:an html extravaganza showing who you are, how good your
taste is, what your enthusiasms are, and some tools that might
help someone who shared one of them.
automated 1040EZ form: an Excel worksheet that asks only that
the user enter her data to generate her income tax, performing
all the calculations itself.
lurking _et al._ report: two or more pages outlining your
experience with your chosen listservs, and newsgroups, commenting
on what seems salient about the written material, and the folks
who submit it.
hypertext:a small (ten chunks or less) piece of reader-directed
imaginative writing.
paper: a big (5 plus pages) foot/endnoted paper that documents
something you've discovered about the device's impact that you
feel either passionate about or intrigued by. It's also a chance
to astound me with your technical mastery of the word processor,
graphs, illustrations, pretty-printing, etc.
