Earlham
College Distribution
This a diagram of the network connection in the Computing
Center in Lilly Library. This is only a logical representation of
the network connection. The physical reality is more complicated.
Notice that all of the connections go into the router. This component
is the heart and soul of the network. If the router goes down, then
the network goes down. Though it does not happen too often, components
such as router do crash. Usually, they stay up a long time, then
they go through a brief period where they might crash every 3 hours.
The Earlham College network is designed to run at
10Mbps (Mega bits per second). All building on campus with the exception
of the Meetinghouse, Norwich Lodge, and College Houses have CAT 5 Twisted-pair
cables installed. All of the active componets on campus, with the
exception of the switch, are designed to support 10Mbps. The connection
between the router and the switch is 100Mbps.
The reason why only the router and the switch have
the 100Mbps connection is because the switch services the CC subnet.
The CC subnet includes all of the servers, Yang, Chi, Newearl, WebDB, and
more. I will put those servers on the diagram soon. By giving
the servers the 100Mbps connection, that alleviates some of the congestion
on the network and it allows the servers to put out more data in less time.
