Earlham
College Network
This is a diagram of the Earlham College Network.
As you can see, the backbone of the network is the multi-mode fiber that
originates from the computing center in Lilly Library and terminates in
various places all over campus. Most of the fiber is installed in
the underground service tunnels not shown on this map. The number
outside of the squares are the number of channels that go into the building.
The numbers within the square indicate how many channel terminate within
that building. For example, if we follow the fiber that runs into
Dennis Hall, we see that 48 channels go into Dennis, but only 12 channels
actually terminate there.
The connections that go out side of the Earlham
Campus are indicated by the frame relay circuit that goes to Infocom, the
point to point circuit that goes to IHETS and the single-mode fiber that
goes to RP&L and ultimately Infocom. The frame relay circuit
and the point to point circuit both come into the Computing Center (marked
CC on the diagram) in Lilly Library. The single-mode fiber patches
into the network at the IDF near Admissions South.
One problem with this design is that there is a
single point of failure, Lilly Library. If anything should happen
to the connections at Lilly Library, then the network goes down.
For example, if the connection between Lilly and Dennis is severed, then
Dennis, Wildman, Stanely, and Tyler will be cut off from the network, while
everyone else stays on, provided that their connections are not cut.
That may change in the future.
