This is a research project focused on developing the hardware and software for interfacing experimental apparatus to computers for the physics, biology, and chemistry departments. I will explore the use of a PC running LINUX operating system interfaced to a commercially available electronic lab interface. This lays the groundwork for future collaboration between the biology, physics, and chemistry departments.
The first part is finding out the internal specifications and API's from manufaturers of equipment to see if I can use those with LINUX.
The second part would be writing device drivers for equipment for the LINUX operating system.
The third part is writing software or porting existing
application software to run under LINUX.
I feel that with this project, I'll be applying the knowledge I've gained for practical experience in my field of study that is difficult to come by in college. I'm also encouraged to be laying a foundation that students in the future will be able to build on and learn from.
The evaluation of this independent study will be
pass/fail based on the descretion of the faculty supervisor.
