This is the first year the Networks and Networking class has been offered. This class is a preliminary look at the issues involved in interconnecting computers. We are also looking first hand at what networking technologies we have at our disposal.

We will be doing two or three projects this semester. Our first project is to map out the network in our local community. The networks will include both campus-wide networks as well as the backbone networks around the county.

I am also going to be working with a couple people implementing an IP choke. The program will be implemented in the kernel of a free OS (Linux, FreeBSD) and will allow the user to specify the speed at which packets can go between two (or more) network interfaces.

If time permits, we may do one other project, but I think that these two will be enough to keep us busy...
