Welcome!

You've found the web site of the Earlham College Mathematics Department. We encourage you to explore our site, and we welcome your questions or comments!

At Earlham College, devotion to one's discipline and to outstanding teaching is the faculty standard. This devotion is certainly evident in the faculty of the Department of Mathematics: you are invited to check out our faculty page to learn more about us and our students. Mic Jackson, Tim McLarnan, and Anand Pardhanani.

We strive to teach our students mathematical fundamentals and problem-solving skills that they can apply in a variety of disciplines. Each year, teams of Earlham students participate in the annual international Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). In 1999, one of our teams was awarded an ``Outstanding Rating'' for their entry. This is the highest possible rating that a team can earn, and last year only two teams (the other being from a university in China) were awarded this rating on the problem that our students attempted. We hope our students will have have a great experience with MCM each year; however, our goal is not that one of our teams earn an "outstanding" each year.

Over the years, about half of our majors have been women. In spite of a predjudice in the American culture against women in mathematics, our experience makes it clear that there is no significant difference in the mathematical potential of young women and young men. We recently responded to an offensive article in the local newspaper, in which women's inherent mathematical ability was again questioned. Please take a look: Women's Brains

Graduates in mathematics have gone on to careers in mathematics and in fields dependent upon mathematical knowhow. Many pursue graduate degrees, others go right to work. Check out Math Careers if you'd like to know more about to what kind a career a degree in mathematics might lead.

If you would like to know some of the details of when we teach various courses, take a look at the our schedule for this academic year, and for next.

If you are interested in learning more mathematics and using what you know, you might want to give us a longer look.
