About the Department Earlham's Mathematics Department offers a program for students interested in developing their understanding of and ability to use mathematics. Students may choose to study mathematics in preparation for graduate work and/or a career in an area of mathematical science or in one of many other fields for which mathematical competence is essential. Students intending to major or minor in mathematics are encouraged to become involved in a number of activities, including regular "mathophiles" meetings, regional professional meetings, and summer research programs. Many majors participate in off-campus programs, with special interest in Aberdeen, Scotland and Budapest, Hungary over the past few years. Over the past few years, our graduates have gone in many directions upon leaving Earlham. Some have attended graduate school in an area of the mathematical sciences at institutions including Chicago, Ball State, Kentucky, North Carolina, University of Oregon, Stanford, Washington State, and Wisconsin. A few have studied law, or other graduate subjects not clearly tied to mathematics, at institutions including Cincinnati Conservatory, Harvard, University of Illinois, and University of Maryland. Graduates are employed in such positions as actuary, architect, bank officer, carpenter, college professor, computer consultant, computer programmer, environmental statistician, finance director, high school teacher, librarian, musician, photographer, and university athletic director. |
