Mathematics Faculty

Michael Bee Jackson micj@earlham.edu
Mic Jackson earned his Ph.D. from the University of South Florida in mathematics education, after receiving an undergraduate civil engineering degree. He has been active in calculus reform, editing a popular collection of calculus problems. He also was among the early group of college faculty who sought appropriate uses of computer technology in teaching calculus. Before moving into mathematics he worked for six years as a civil engineer with a primary interest in environmental engineering. Mic was involved in environmental modeling at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee in the mid-90's. He introduced mathematical modeling of environmental problems into our curriculum. Mic is also the director of Earlham's Environmental Programs.

Timothy McLarnan TimM@earlham.edu
Tim McLarnan, has two Ph.D.'s: geophysical sciences from the University of Chicago and combinatorial mathematics from the University of California, San Diego. Tim is known as a devoted teacher, immersing himself in class related activities during the academic year. He is also our most active source of both hard mathematical problems and elegant solutions. Tim keeps busy outside of Earlham through his commitment with the Russian Orthodox Church, and working with his wife as they homeschool their four children.

Anand Pardhanani PardhAn@earlham.edu
Our newest colleague, Anand Pardhanani, comes to us from Austin, Texas, where he most recently taught mathematics at Southwestern University. Prior to that, Anand carried out a successful research career, working on problems at the boundaries between mathematics and engineering and natural science. Over a number of years, he came to realize that, as much as he enjoyed mathematical research, he wanted to spend the rest of his career teaching mathematics. He brings a commitment to his students whether they are mathophiles or mathphobes. Outside of the classroom, Anand has been active in organizations, including some Quaker organizations, working on peace, justice and equity issues.
