A Footpath in the Wilderness: A 6-day introduction to the Long Trail of Vermont

What is The Long Trail? The Long Trail, often called Vermont's footpath in the wilderness, is the oldest long-distance backpacking trail in the country stretching a total of 270 miles. It winds its way along the ridgeline of Vermont's Green Mountains from the Massachusetts border to the Canadian border. It was built by the Green Mountain Club of Vermont between 1910-1930. Many have heard of the Appalachian Trail... here is her original inspiration.

The Jordan Family Outdoor Adventure Program aims to bring people of many ages together to experience the natural beauty of Vermont and neighboring states. Our leaders are trained to help build a strong sense of community among campers, to teach backcountry skills, and to help keep campers safe in the wilderness.

Trip Description

This trip is an introduction to the Long Trail of Vermont which will cover the first 47 miles, giving campers a chance to experience hiking two of Vermont's beautiful peaks along the Green Mountain ridge.

The trip is designed for hikers 14 years of age or older. The hike will consist of 6 days of backpacking travel beginning at Pine Cobble trailhead and ending at Stratton Pond exit trail. We will hike an average of 6 and half miles per day, our last day being the longest. The distance per day is not too long but there will certainly be areas of steep and rocky terrain. We will stay at 6 different shelters along the way. At each site we will have group time for lessons, cooking, and games as well as free time for journaling and relaxing.
