AWPE 211 - Introduction to Caving Syllabus
Caving is an exciting adventure activity and there is an abundance of wonderful caves in Indiana, hence the existence of this course. During this course we will be discussing basic horizontal caving techniques, caving safety and ethics, and basic cave geology. The final trip requires the application of these skills and knowledge which will be attained in the classroom sessions. We hope that you will have a new appreciation of caves and cave exploration upon completion of this course.
Dates:
Classroom sessions:
-Tuesday, February 20. 7-9pm. (Place TBA, will notify via email)
-Tuesday, February 27. 7-9pm. (Place TBA, will notify via email)
Caving Trips: (Participants will choose one trip to attend)
-Trip 1: March 3 & 4
-Trip 2: March 10 & 11
The caves are located in South-Central Indiana, approximately 3 hours from Richmond.
Expectations: -All participants are expected to practice Leave No Trace guidelines and caving-specific ethics during caving trips. -It is required that participants attend all classroom sessions and the trip in order to pass and receive credit for the course. -The Wilderness Department will provide most of the gear for the trip but there are some basic items that you will need to provide. Most of these items are listed on the reverse side of the syllabus.
