AWPE: Intermediate Rock Climbing - Spring Semester 2007

Course Description

The Intermediate Rock Climbing class is designed to give participants the skills necessary to safely lead personal outdoor rock climbing trips. This course is for highly motivated individuals looking to both improve their climbing ability and gain technical knowledge needed for basic types of outdoor climbing. Previous experience is necessary. Unlike most AWPE classes, this class will include homework, quizzes and practical exams. The amount of time required for this class will greatly exceed that normally expected in order to earn a half college credit. Students will not only be expected to participate in each of the classes, but also climb outside of class in order to practice skill sets introduced in class.

The program will consist of six mandatory classes and a final trip. The final trip takes the class to one of several Midwest rock climbing locations. This location will be determined by the instructors and will be based on the progress and ambitions of the students in the class.

Expectations

The Instructors expect students to fully engage in all the activities related to this course. This means students must attend all meetings and show up on time. Again, attendance is mandatory. Failure to attend any meeting will result in immediate failure . We also expect that students understand that this is a climbing course. We will be dealing with heights and potential hazards. We expect responsible behavior from all students. Indoor climbing and trips into the wilderness can be very fun, however they also yield potential hazards. Students need to make decisions with their responsibility to the group in mind.

Students can expect that the instructors will be attentive to the student’s wishes and needs. Your instructors (Alex & Andrew) will be responsible for ensuring class is as safe and fun as possible. Both instructors are willing and happy to answer questions and help anyone in need. We truly enjoy this field and hope all our students leave this class feeling the same passion.

Clothing & Equipment

For all class meetings, students should wear good workout clothes. The final trip will be entirely outdoors and we will be camping. This means students will need to dress appropriately for the weather. We will be handing out lists of what each student should have at one of the later classes. If you have any questions regarding equipment you may need, please contact the instructors.

Safety

Due to the fact that the activities this course focuses on have inherent dangers, it is important that students understand these dangers before classes begin. The dangers of rock climbing include, but are not limited to: rock falls, injuries on the approach to climbing areas, injuries caused by falling while climbing, and potential encounters with local wildlife. While these risks are serious, responsibility and well thought decisions can greatly reduce the likelihood of injury. It is not only the responsibility of the instructors to do their best to decrease the possibility of injury, but also the responsibility of the students to act in a responsible and compliant manner. All students will be expected to carefully read the waivers handed out at the first meeting. Anyone with questions regarding safety should be sure to ask the instructors to clarify the conditions before signing. If any individual is uncomfortable with the risks involved in this course, he or she has the right to withdraw from the course.

Enrolling

By signing the class roster, participants agree to the terms above and recognize that all students listed on the roster, as written in the first meeting, will be billed the class fee noted on WebDB. The class roster is the final enrollment list for the class and will be turned in to the Registrar’s office and no refunds will be available if this course is dropped during the coming semester.
