Logs for fall 2003 Senior Seminar

Julie Pickett, fall 2003

I am officially doing a software engineering project with an example set of database applications. I am currently researching software engineering methodologies and plan to design software according to some specific methodology. I am currently researching UML for this purpose. The software will be a set of database applications tailored to fulfill the needs of a local abstracting office of which I am associated. I have a full understanding of the needs of this software and will lay out the specifications in a properly formatted document as soon as I am familiar with the needs of said document. Until that point, I will continue to research software engineering methods as I build a list of sources.

Met with Jim, and I need to get a handle on my log situation. I also need to get past this requirements hurdle and move on. I need to learn Java and start thinking about the implementation in terms of Java psuedo code so that I don't have to invent the wheel in a few weeks. If I get a handle on Java now, the implementation should be pretty easy. I also need to post my survey on my project page, along with sme representation of my slides. Hopefully I can get to that tomorrow.

We talked about the proposal that is due in a few weeks. The introduction will be a summary of the survey that we drafted, and then the actual proposal and plan will follow. We need to include a progress report and a diagram of our time frame for the rest of the semester so that we can keep on track. Now is the time to worry about keeping on track so that we can ensure a complete project to present in December. We also updated each other about where we stand on our projects. This is both good and bad, because it really gives me additional deadlines. I can't really walk into class and say that I haven't done anything, so I'm forced to work a little harder.

I need to finish up 'negotiations' with the requirements analysis portion of the development so I can move on and make the required UML diagrams. I've been looking at some Java functionality because it seems to be the best choice, unless I develop this as a web service, which would be easier for me, but the implemtation would be tricky in the office. So I need to continue looking at Java. This is really the last week I can spend on anything but coding, or I'll fall too far behind schedule, so this week I need a requirements documents and the specifications and design diagrams.
